Tencent (0700.HK) Preannouncement Analysis -1Q14 Mobile Game Revenue to Surprise on the Upside

May 9, 2014 | Singapore

Given the diverse nature (in quantity and variety) of the market for mobile games (compared with, for example, PC games) it is more difficult to accurately track revenue generated. For Q4 2013, Tencent reported mobile game revenues of only RMB 600mn, much below market expectations. Using Goldpebble Research’s proprietary mobile game revenue model, monthly revenue and net income numbers generated from 17 of Tencent’s major games gave Q1 2014 revenue of over RMB 1.67bn, more than twice street estimates.

It is our view that YUM China division’s SSSG has gotten worse from September to November of 2012. The secular growth of online shopping, the discretionary nature of KFC food in China, and the downturn of the economy all hurt KFC in a big way in the long run. In the short-term, the colder weather this past November and exploding food safety issues have worsened KFC’s problems.
